Nations, Nationalities & Peoples Day

The following pictures were during the 13th Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Day celebration that was hosted in Addis Ababa on the 8th of December 2018.

At that time tensions were very high between various nationalities in Ethiopia in general, and in the Eastern region of our nation in particular. The Harari National Regional State was no exception to the tension that existed at that time, and it could be argued that it has fared better when compared with the neighboring regions.

However, the pressure was undoubtedly intense and overbearing on Harar and Hararis at that time. Those of us in Addis felt that we should assert our existence loudly and clearly to the world during the Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Day celebration. Towards that end some of us in Addis decided to join the cultural delegation that was sent from Harar through the cultural bureau, and to participate in the events alongside them bolstering their number.

Some of the Afochas sent representatives to the event to partake in the long march from the streets of Addis to the stadium. The elderly Harari women in particular showed remarkable commitment by walking long distances with full energy in the program venues. All this commitment with no abel (per diem) at all.
